Wanda Gillespie is an Australian / New Zealand contemporary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa New Zealand. Over the past decade she has refined her craft as a woodcarver through the creation of evocative portrait sculptures, combining detailed and abstracted, ancient and contemporary form.
Portrait in a South Easterly was created at the start of Gillespie's residency on Waiheke Island, where she noticed the frequent commentary on the direction of the wind from the locals. She found herself creating windswept portraits in quiet contemplation. Carved in locally grown Ash, this sculpture uses a softer carving style than Gillespie's previous portraits, with eyes undefined, encouraging viewers to use their imagination to complete the picture.
