Wanda Gillespie is an Australian / New Zealand contemporary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa New Zealand. Over the past decade she has refined her craft as a woodcarver through the creation of evocative portrait sculptures, combining detailed and abstracted, ancient and contemporary form.
Walks amongst the magnificent Kauri during her Karekare house residency sparked ideas on how she could make a link between these precious endangered trees and our reflections on what we value. Wanda created a version of the ancient counting tablet with the female Kauri cone pattern as the central design. Varying levels/layers is a common element in the Mesoamerican counting tablets.
