Jim Wheeler’s Lancewood Leaf Mature is a sculpture of one of New Zealand's unique native trees, Lancewood, or horoeka. The lance-like foliage changes as the tree matures so the tree looks remarkably different when mature.
As Wheeler says: "Lancewoods have always fascinated me since the first time I walked in the NZ bush. Having emigrated here from the USA where I studied forest ecology and sculpture I was doubly struck finding the juvenile leaves lying on the forest floor!
Over the decades I have returned again and again towards the study of Lancewoods. This recent series of leaf types, sizes and stages of growth have been another deep research dive towards new works on the horizon."
